A cyclist moved at a speed of xkm/hr for 2 hours. He then increased his speed by 2 km/hr for the next 3 hours. If the total distance covered is 36km, what is his initial speed,?

The distance covered in 2hr  with the speed of x km/hr is,

= 2x km

now the speed is raised by 2, so new speed is (x+2) km/hr

distance covered in 3 hr with the speed of (x+2) km/hr is,

= 3 * (x+2) = (3x+6 )km

therefore total distance covered is,

2x+(3x+6) km = (5x+6) km

but the total distance given is 36km,

5x +6 = 36

5x = 30, x= 6 km/hr

hence the initial speed is 6km/hr
