Principle of solar cell and uses of it

Solar cell is also known as a photovoltaic cell, that converts light energy into electrical energy.

A solar cell is basically a p-n junction diode which generates e.m.f when solar radiation falls on the p-n junction . 

Principle

When light falls on the junction, electron-hole pairs are generated near the junction due to absorption of photons. Reverse current increases with increase in intensity of light and vice versa

Uses

Used in hand held calculators, watches portable TV sets, communication stations , mobile military operations etc
